Reuters: Apple Ordered to Pay $110.7 Million for Wireless Patent Infringement

Apple Inc. has been ordered to pay $110.7 million to Spanish company TOT Power Control for infringing a wireless communication patent, according to a report published by Reuters on July 1.

A jury found that transceivers used in Apple devices rely on 3G wireless technology covered by TOT’s patents. The patent in question was developed by engineer Alvaro Lopez-Medrano, who founded TOT Power Control.
陪审团认定，苹果设备中使用的收发器依赖 TOT 公司持有的3G无线技术专利。该专利由工程师阿尔瓦罗·洛佩斯-梅德拉诺（Alvaro Lopez-Medrano）发明，他是 TOT Power Control 的创始人。
The patented technology manages how power is used in response to changes in signal-to-noise ratios in wireless communication. While TOT does not manufacture products, it has previously sued companies such as LG, Samsung, Verizon, AT&T, and T-Mobile over similar patent issues.

TOT filed the lawsuit in 2021, stating it had contacted Apple and its wireless baseband processor suppliers to offer licensing agreements, but was rejected.

Apple argued in court that TOT’s patent was invalid, but failed to convince the jury. TOT is now seeking damages and ongoing royalty payments.
